Overstory Mapping & Research is excited to announce that we’re looking for a GIS Specialist to join our team! This is a fantastic opportunity for someone early in their GIS career who wants to apply their skills to meaningful projects that support Indigenous and local communities, environmental stewardship, and data sovereignty.
About the Role
The GIS Specialist will support a variety of mapping and research projects, with responsibilities that include:
Creating and managing spatial datasets in ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and QGIS
Producing maps, data visualizations, and web applications for clients and partners
Organizing and analyzing geospatial data
Mobilize spatial information through digitization and georeferencing
Supporting research, documentation, and training resources
Collaborating with Indigenous and local community partners in respectful and culturally sensitive ways
This role is ideal for someone with 1–2 years of GIS experience (academic or professional) and a strong interest in working at the intersection of Indigenous knowledge, environmental issues, and geospatial technology.
What We’re Looking For
Post-secondary coursework in GIS (certificate, diploma, or undergraduate level)
Experience with ArcGIS Online, plus ArcGIS Pro and QGIS
Familiarity with managing and analyzing spatial data
Strong organizational and research skills
A genuine interest in Indigenous and environmental issues
Experience working with Indigenous communities
Position Details
Type: Part-time, term position
Hours: 10–20 hours per week (flexible)
Location: Remote (Victoria or British Columbia–based candidates preferred)
Start Date: As soon as possible
End Date: December 31, 2025 (with possibility of extension)
Compensation: $30-$40/hr, dependent upon experience
